3 Jon Snow Theories That’ll Shake Up Westeros

Jon Snow is no longer just the regular brooding bastard from next door, ladies and gents. Long gone are his days of protecting the Wall or befriending wildlings. It’s safe to say the King in the North has had his fair share of ups and downs. His resume is undoubtedly the most impressive in Westeros and certainly includes more skills than just:

Jon has been stabbed in the heart, brought back to life, petted a dragon and fought off White Walkers. That’s not all. In fact, if these jaw-dropping theories prove to be true, Jon Snow will also add “King of Westeros”, the “Prince that was Promised” and “Dragon-Rider” to his resume, too.

You read that right – Jon could indeed be the true heir to the Iron Throne. How? Check out these top 3 Jon Snow theories that will make your jaw drop…

1. Jon Snow is the Rightful King of Westeros

Move over, Dany, there’s a rightful king in town – and he’s your nephew!

In case you haven’t noticed yet, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen are related. How, you may ask? As revealed at the end of season 6, Jon is indeed the son of Lyanna Stark, Ned’s sister. Rumor has it, that Lyanna was abducted and raped by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys’ dead and older brother. When Lyanna was held hostage at the Tower of Joy, she ended up dying from childbirth and begged her brother Ned (who came to rescue her) never to reveal her secret child’s true parentage – AKA the identity of Rhaegar, Jon’s real father.

Here’s where this Jon Snow theory gets interesting – If Jon is Rhaegar’s son, it ultimately makes him the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

But isn’t Daenerys, the rightful queen? She’s the last living Targaryen, after all – or so it seems.

She would have been, had Jon not existed. But his existence and heritage now challenges everything that’s ever mattered in Westeros.

Before he was killed by Robert Baratheon, Rhaegar was the next in line to the Throne, after his father, the Mad King (who’s dead and gone). Rhaegar’s other two children, (Rhaenys and Aegon Targaryen) from another marriage, died years before. Meaning, Jon is Rhaegar’s only living offspring, which ultimately makes him true heir to the Throne.

What makes this theory even more accurate is what Gilly, Sam’s girlfriend discovered in Eastwatch.

Here it is in English: Rhaegar annulled his marriage to his first wife in order to marry another – AKA Lyanna Stark – AKA, Jon’s mother.

What a GAME-CHANGER! Jon is not a bastard after all, but rather the LEGITIMATE SON OF PRINCE RHAEGAR TARGARYEN, which means he ultimately has a BETTER CLAIM THAN DAENERYS!

Daenerys is no longer the last living Targaryen, folks – Jon is. Westeros’ succession laws favour male heirs, meaning that his claim is certainly stronger than hers. So, it seems Daenerys has another competitor in town. Will she kill Jon to claim the Throne for herself or will the duo marry so the seat can be shared? Time will tell.

2. Jon Snow is Azor Ahai

Over 5000 years ago in the Game of Thrones world, a legendary hero named Azor Ahai defended the Seven Kingdoms against the menacing White Walkers. Legend says that Azor will be reborn again to fight a coming darkness. Now would be a good time considering winter truly is coming. Was Jon Snow reborn as Azor Ahai when Melisandre brought him back to life? Is he the prophesied hero?

So what do Jon and Azor have in common and how does this fan-theory make any sense?

• The reincarnation of Azor Ahai is presumed to be the descendant of the Mad King, Aerys and Rhaella. We discovered at the end of season 6 that Jon Snow is indeed the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. That would make him the true descendant, no?
• Both Jon and Azor have a special sword used to kill White Walkers. Azor had his burning sword called the “Lightburner” and Jon has his, named “Longclaw” which he’s already used to slaughter walkers in battles like Hardhome.
• In the novels, Melisandre is given several hints about Jon and snow in her fires. In A Dance With Dragons, she thinks to herself, “I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai and R’hllor shows me only Snow”. Naturally, all fingers point to Jon.
• The description of Jon Snow’s death in the book state that his wounds were “smoking” as Bowen Marsh cried (salty tears). Keep in mind that Azor Ahai is said to have been born in salt and smoke. Was this the moment Jon was reborn as the prophesied hero?

3. Jon Snow is a Dragon Rider

I’m sure you’ve heard all about the Three-Headed Dragon theory. In the novels, Daenerys sees her brother Rhaegar saying, “The dragon has three heads” during one of her visions in the House of the Undying.

So far, we already know that Dany has three dragons, Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion (who’s turned to the other side). The Targaryen sigil also features a three-headed dragon and it’s a historical fact that Aegon Targaryen took Westeros with his two sisters, all three riding dragons.

Jon, is an obvious choice because, as we’ve learned, he is indeed son to Rhaegar, meaning he is a true Targaryen, and it’s believed that those with Targaryen blood are more likely to be dragon riders.

It only makes sense that Jon rides Rhaegal (named after Rhaegar), right? So what about Viserion?

Before he was killed by the Night King, many believed Tyrion was the third dragon rider based on the theory that he is son of Aerys II Targaryen and Joanna Lannister. But now that the dragon is in the white walker’s hands, it’s led us to assume that perhaps the Night King is indeed the third rider. Maybe you don’t require Targaryen blood to ride a dragon, after all.

Will he be riding Viserion into battle against Dany and Jon? It sure seems so!
