Taglines: At long last Redmond Barry became a gentleman — and that was his tragedy.
Irish Redmond Barry fate is testing the strength of his youth. He, being in love with cousin Nora, challenges Captain Quin to a duel, with whom she is engaged. The girl’s relatives were not profitable for the death of the officer, and they took care of the staging. Nevertheless, Redmond went on the run, but was robbed. Finding himself without money, he is forced to become a soldier in the English army. Soon, having guessed that sooner or later he would die on the battlefield, he decided to desert.
In Prussian territory, he was quickly discovered and recorded in his ranks. He fights bravely, and he is transferred to the service of the secret police. By that time, the initially unsophisticated Irishman had become a burnt adventurer. One of his ventures was a marriage with the widow Lyndon. Taking her surname, he counted on a considerable fortune, but fate decreed otherwise.
An Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband’s aristocratic position in 18th-century England.

In the eighteenth century, in a small village in Ireland, Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal) is a young farm boy in love with his cousin Nora Brady (Gay Hamilton). When Nora gets engaged to British Captain John Quin (Leonard Rossiter), Barry challenges him to a duel of pistols. He wins and escapes to Dublin, but is robbed on the road. Without an alternative, Barry joins the British Army to fight in the Seven Years War. He deserts and is forced to join the Prussian Army, where he saves the life of his Captain and becomes his protégé and spy of Irish gambler Chevalier de Balibari (Patrick Magee). He helps Chevalier and becomes his associate until he decides to marry the wealthy Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson). They move to England and Barry, in his obsession of nobility, dissipates her fortune and makes a dangerous and revengeful enemy.
