The 11 episodes of Season 1 will start by intriguing you, then confusing you and by the fag end, bore you with the characters’ repeated follies and nagging reactions to each other. The story of lust, longing, lies and loneliness will exhaust you with its series of sex scenes, violent expressions of characters and each character’s distorted mentality. All this while they dress impeccably, live in plush bungalows and lead dark, troubled lives. With the luxury around them, their troubles are only sexual in nature. The characters are never seen working, except Saayoni Ghosh’s character. Most are vulnerable about their carnal desires and almost come to committing crimes of passion each time they interact. You will wonder why and how they escape doing that each time and meet again only to repeat dialogues filled with forced angst.
The scenes are well edited though, but the script will make you jump out of your senses often. With limited scope in the story, the direction is surprisingly good. But same can’t be said about the acting. Barring Sourav Das and Saayoni Ghosh, the rest appear quite stiff while delivering their dialogues. The sets are different in each new scene and match perfectly with the scene requirements. There are no continuity issues too.
What binds Season 1 with Season 2 is the music. The background scores are the only relief in this highly charged, sexually regressive and distressing tale. In the nine episodes of Season 2 some of the former season’s characters unwittingly and unrealistically cross each other’s paths. They stay on to complicate matters in relationships and unleash another bout of violent sex scenes. But unlike Season 1, in Season 2 there are some back stories that has led to the current trauma of the characters. In Season 1 making mistakes were like the characters’ whims and fancies. In Season 2, at least they are bound by circumstances. But with each track and repeated follies of the characters, each character becomes frivolous in nature. The director and the script probably tried to play on the series name – Charitraheen – by suggesting how people are drawn into becoming one. But too much of one thing make the efforts dull.
Though the direction remains steady, there could have been more suggestive scenes than shows of open brutality. In Season 2, there are continuity problems in a few scenes. While trying to establish the sexual dependence of each character on the other, the acting becomes forced and often over the top.
If you happen to watch both the seasons completely, there are many instances in the episodes where you would want to stop for good.
