Taglines: End of confrontation, one must die.
Oh Dae-Su is a completely unremarkable, petty businessman leading a very ordinary life. One evening, he decides to drop into a bar and skip a couple of glasses, especially since there is a good reason for a drink – his daughter’s birthday. Not calculating the strength, the man gets drunk, begins to disorderly and gets into the nearest police station. A faithful friend No Joo-hwan frees an unlucky buoy from his cell under his guarantee, but doesn’t have time to get home: as soon as a friend was distracted for several minutes, they were kidnapped.
The main character comes to life in a tiny room, which is destined to become his prison for a long 15 years. He is fed dumplings, allowed to watch TV and engage in martial arts, but there are no windows in the room, and the door never opens: unknown kidnappers thought of everything to deprive the prisoner of the opportunity to escape. He also will not succeed in committing suicide, thanks to the close monitoring of the jailers.
The absurdity of the situation is that a prisoner cannot understand who had the idea of playing such a cruel joke with him? Could the human soul, having endured terrible trials, retain in itself that light that is in it initially or will the desire for revenge turn a person into a bloodthirsty monster?
After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in five days.
Abducted on a rainy night in 1988, the obnoxious drunk, Oh Dae-Su, much to his surprise, wakes up locked in a windowless and dilapidated hotel room, for an unknown reason. There, his invisible and pitiless captors will feed him, clothe him, and sedate him to avert a desperate suicide–and as his only companion and a window to the world is the TV in his stark cell–the only thing that helps Oh Dae-Su keep going is his daily journal. Then, unexpectedly, after fifteen long years in captivity, the perplexed prisoner is deliberately released, encouraged to track down his tormentor to finally get his retribution. However, who would hate Oh Dae-Su so much he would deny him of a quick and clean death?
Based on Old Boy by Garon Tsuchiya Nobuaki Minegishi.
