When They See Us Web Series
TV Mini-Series “When They See Us” is based on real events that took place in New York in 1989. It was a time of racial prejudice and discrimination against black people in the country. Indeed, they were often often guilty of various crimes, but often they attributed all conceivable and unthinkable crimes. One such crime formed the basis of the plot.
In 1989, a jogger was assaulted and raped in New York’s Central Park, and five young people were subsequently charged with the crime. The quintet, labeled the Central Park Five, maintained its innocence and spent years fighting the convictions, hoping to be exonerated. This limited series spans a quarter of a century, from when the teens are first questioned about the incident in the spring of 1989, going through their exoneration in 2002 and ultimately the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014. The cast is full of Emmy nominees and winners, including Michael Kenneth Williams, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, and Blair Underwood. Oscar nominated and Emmy winner Ava DuVernay co-wrote and directed the four episodes.
In Central Park, a white girl was brutally raped and beaten, finding herself there alone after dark. Instead of a real investigation of the crime, law enforcement agencies are guided only by racist prejudices and grab the first five black guys that came across who were in the park on an unfortunate day.
Suspected teenagers claim that they are not involved in this crime. Moreover, there is strong evidence of their innocence. However, this does not bother anyone, and the guys are imprisoned for different terms – up to 13 years. It was a real scandal. However, a particularly loud echo followed over the years, when a real rapist who committed that crime appeared … However, the broken fates of five black guys can no longer be corrected.
