Ah Sahm arrives in San Francisco in search of his sister, Xiaojing. While defending another Chinese migrant, Ah Sahm gains the attention of Wang Chao, a black market purveyor who takes him to meet Father Jun, the leader of the Hop Wei tong. Elsewhere, Officer Richard Lee arrests a pair of Irishmen for murdering two Chinese laborers. Lymon Merriweather, a wealthy businessman and the employer of the two victims, pressures Mayor Samuel Blake to protect his workers; in response, Mayor Blake orders the creation of a Chinatown police squad under veteran Officer Bill O’Hara, which Officer Lee joins. Father Jun’s son, Young Jun, is nearly abducted from a brothel by the rival Long Zii tong, but Ah Sahm comes to his rescue. Later, Ah Sahm encounters Li Yong, the Long Zii’s enforcer and discovers that his sister is now married to the leader of the Long Zii and goes by the name Mai Ling. Accustomed to her new life, she tells her brother that her former self is dead and refuses to return to China with him. Distraught, Ah Sahm revisits the brothel and sleeps with the madam, Ah Toy. While Ah Sahm sleeps, Ah Toy kills the two recently bailed Irishmen who are revealed to be part of the Irish Mob. That same night, Mai Ling secretly meets with Deputy Mayor Walter Buckley and promises him that peace between the tongs will not occur in Chinatown.
San Francisco, 1878. Ah Sahm, a newly arrived Chinese immigrant with serious fighting skills, is introduced to Chinatown’s most ruthless tong, the Hop Wei, by Chao, a fixer. After impressing Young Jun, son of tong leader Father Jun, Ah Sahm is branded and taken to a brothel, where he befriends Ah Toy, a courtesan with connections. Later, in search of a woman who left China two years earlier, Ah Sahm crosses paths with Mai Ling and Li Yong, followers of the rival tong leader Long Zii, who is trying to avoid an opium war with the Hop Wei, a war that Walter Buckley, deputy to San Francisco Mayor Samuel Blake, actively promotes. Meanwhile, after two Chinese laborers are killed by white thugs, police sergeant “Big Bill” O’Hara is tasked with creating a Chinatown squad. Enlisting southern-born cop Richard Henry Lee, Bill soon finds that the hostility between the Chinese and white dock workers, whose unofficial leader is Irish tough Dylan Leary, is unlikely to end anytime soon.
